DOST-PCIEERD, BARANGAY 352 AND FEATIU SIGN MOA
On April 20, FEATIU hosted a MOA signing led by the Office of Research and Development and Extension (ORDE) office for the deployment of a low-cost modular type rainwater collection system in Barangay 352 of Sta. Cruz, Manila to be monitored by the Aeronautical Engineering students of the University.
Aeronautical Engineering students had started their rainwater collection project under the guidance of their adviser Engr. Joefreim Delicano as an independent project. It was presented to Dr. Rogelio Panlasigui, ORDE Director and Dean of the College of Engineering, for possible utilization by Barangay 352, the adopted community of FEATIU. It was also featured as a conceptual project of the Aero/AMT Department at this year’s FEATI S&T Expo. Aware of the program being undertaken by PCIEERD-DOST to help communities mitigate the effects of El Nino through rainwater harvesting, Dr. Panlasigui advised the Aero/AMT Department to explore a possible collaboration by writing to PCIEERD Executive Director, Dr. Carlos Primo C. David, offering Barangay 352 as a recipient.
The Rainwater Collection System will collect water in a 1000-liter capacity plastic assembly designed and manufactured by Manly Plastics, Inc. The collection unit will be equipped with a ceramic filtration system designed and fabricated by DOST Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI). The performance of the water collection system will be evaluated and the collected water quality will be tested to allow the community members themselves to benefit from the “harvested” water by reducing their dependence on the water utility. The FEATIU students will monitor the utilization and effectiveness of the collection system.
Says Ms. Marilou Bernarte, FEATIU Outreach Program Coordinator, “Since starting the community outreach program in 2012, we’ve been coming up with activities for the community that we have adopted. This is one such project that will benefit all three sectors, the public, the research community and the academe.”
The success and effectiveness of this project in the long term is much anticipated by all parties involved.
The signatories present for the MOA signing were: Dr. Carlos Primo C. David, Executive Director, DOST-PCIEERD , Ms. Maria Patricia V. Anzana, DOST-ITDI, Dr. Adolfo Jesus R. Gopez, FEATIU President, Hon. Kenneth S. Concepcion, Barangay 352 Chairman of Sta. Cruz, Manila and Mr. Jonathan Co of Manly Plastics, Inc.
