Dr. Leopoldo V. Abis: In Memoriam

Dr. Leopoldo V. Abis, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs of FEATI University passed away in the evening of Saturday, November 10, 2017, just five days before his 85thbirthday. He had also been appointed Chairman of the Board of the Trustees of the University in October 2016. Dr. Abis presided over the 2017 Annual FEATI University Stockholders’ Meeting on October 30, 2017. It was to be his last official act for the University.

LVA, as he was referred to in FEATI earned his BS ME and BS EE degrees in 1954 from the University of the Philippines. He obtained his MS in Mechanical Engineering at Kansas State University in 1958, later returning to Kansas State for his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, which was conferred in 1969. He returned to UP after his MS & Ph.D. Dr. Abis became Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (1972 to 1979) and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering. In 1989 he was seconded to the Department of Science and Technology, where his first post was as Executive Director of the Metals Industry Research and Development Center. Subsequently he was appointed Undersecretary for Regional Operations of DOST by Secretary Ceferino L. Follosco. He served the DOST until his retirement in 1997. During this time he was active with the UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc. as its President. He continued to be a Director of Test Consultants Inc.

In 2003 he was called out of retirement by Prof. Felisberto G.L. Reyes, then President of FEATI University, to serve as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 2009 he was designated as Executive Vice President and in 2016 elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was also Trustee of FEATI University and RPMC, the holding company of FEATI.

LVA brought his characteristic ebullience and cheerfulness to FEATIU and for almost a decade and a half worked with the FEATIU Management Committee, Academic Council and faculty on strategic, mid term and day-to-day matters working towards “Preparing you for a global future”, to ensure that “Things are Looking Up” to “The Great FEATI Experience”.
