Engineer Timoteo A. Cordova, Jr.FEATI AVIATION LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDEE
He was born on August 6, 1928. He is larger than life with a career filled to the brim with academic achievements, professional contributions, leadership and management positions, research, military service, seminars, training, and consultancy activities that would perhaps exhaust the strongest and most agile of men. He was also husband and provider to wife Estelita N. Cordova and son Allan Joseph N. Cordova.He is Engineer Timoteo A. Cordova, Jr.: FEATI Aviation Lifetime Achievement Awardee.Engineer Cordova graduated from FEATI University with several engineering degrees, for each of which he received the citation “With Distinction”Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering, with Distinction: June 1948-April 1952Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, with Distinction: June 1952-April 1956Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with Distinction, June 1957- March 1958From 1952, as he was about to launch himself into four more years of study to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering, this young aeronautical engineer worked at the FEATIU Department of Aeronautical Engineering as Laboratory and Research Assistant.
The years following would see him taking on increasingly important roles as Assistant to the Head of the Aeronautical Engineering Department and University Academic Inspector, Assistant Professor of AeronauticalEngineering, until he became the Department Head of the Aeronautical Engineering Department.Later he was also faculty member of Mechanical Engineering and Physics, serving the University until 1974.Recognized as one of the best minds in the University he worked alongside Dr. Gregorio Y. Zara,the 1961 National Scientist and VPAA of FEATIU, co-authoring the technical paper, “Visual Investigation of Supersonic Flow” based on wind tunnel studies.
He then served in the Philippine Air Force from 1974-1988 with the rank of Captain, then Major and later Lieutenant Colonel, as the Chief of the Engineering and Design Division, and then Director for Operations of the Air Force Research and Development Center of the Philippine Air Force.
He was also Director for R&D Plans & Programs of the AFRDC PAF. He was awarded the Military Merit Medal in 1975, the Military Commendation Medal and Kahusayan Award in 1987, and the Military Merit Medal with Third Bronze Anahaw Leaf in 1988. At each occasion his medal was presented to him by no less than the Commanding Generalof the Philippine Air Force.
As member of the first Regulatory Board of Aeronautical Engineering of the Professional Regulation Commission from 1982-1987, he, along with his peers, conducted the first four Licensure Examinations for Aeronautical Engineers from 1983 to 1986.Engineer Cordova was Chairman of the Committee on Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering of Technical Panel for Engineering Education of DECS in 1987-1988.
This is now the Technical Panel for Engineering and Technology Education of CHED. Later he was tapped to be Consultant for Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines from 2007-2008.After his stint in FEATIU, his passion to teach spread to various universities in Manila where he was a faculty member and department head of Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aeronautical Engineering, and Aircraft Technology from 1984-2005.
He was named Outstanding Professional in Aeronautical Engineering for 1991 awarded by the Professional Regulation Commission, Philippine Federation of Professional Associations, and the Philippine Association of Board Examiners.Working, teaching, and consulting also took him outside of the Philippines.
His travels include the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei; proof that competent engineers like him are much sought after. Engineer Cordova refused to sit on his laurels and given the choice would rather stay active even as he approaches his 90th year. To him ‘learning, sharing, educating, improving, traveling, and flying does not stop until he is no longer of this world.”He is still inspiring, still encouraging, and still going strong.In every sense of the word he is a man to whom FEATInians can “Look Up, Young Man, Look Up!”.
