FEATIU holds Science and Technology Expo 2018, awards best
research projects
STA. CRUZ, Manila –FEATI University, whose research tradition can be traced to the
time of its former dean and vice president Dr. Gregorio Y. Zara, held the FEATIU
Science and Technology Expo 2018 from March 6 to 7, 2018 at the Bridgepoint
Building.
Dr. Rogelio A. Panlasigui, Dean of the College of Engineering and Chairman S&T Expo
2018, led the opening of the event together with the guest of honor Dr. Joel Joseph S.
Marciano, Jr., Acting Director of the Advanced Science and Technology Institute of the
Department of Science and Technology. Also in attendance were Dr.-Ing. Adolfo Jesus
R. Gopez, University President, Francisco A. Segovia, CEO, Dr. Gloria M. Alberto,
Executive Vice President/COO, and Tristan H. Macapanpan, Assistant Vice President
for Academic Affairs.
Exhibit of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Research Project
The research team of Dr. Rogel Mari Sese showed the outputs of their research project entitled
“Design and fabrication of an airframe for medium-range, short take-off and landing UAV.” This
research project is funded by the Department of Science and Technology and is being done by
the Aeronautical Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance Technology Department of FEATI
University, in collaboration with the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA)
of the Department of Agriculture, and Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) of the
Department of Science and Technology. The expected project output consists of the airframe of
the UAV and its supporting internal structures, including the powerplant and mounting
provisions. A one-to-one scale mock up of the UAV was part of the exhibit, together with a
computer simulation showing how it would take off, fly and land. The first prototype of the
medium-range UAV will be named LAWIN-1 (as inspired by the FEATI Seahawks). LAWIN
stands for “Low-altitude Aircraft for Wide-field Imaging and Navigation.” Since the project also
targets the establishment of a research capability part of the output will be the enhancement of
the capabilities of the Aeronautical Engineering Research Laboratory of the Department.
Outstanding research projects
The highlight of the expo was the Research Competition, where the inventive minds and
innovativeness of the students were tested to the limits, but winners stood tall and proud
with their projects in the end.
For the Research Competition-High School Category, Shaira Erika L. dela Cruz from
the Kaunlaran High School took away the first prize of P10,000 with medal, pin and
certificate for her project called “Mussel Reaper.” Her coach was Heydiliza A. Santos.
The second prize went to Keirvin Cloi D.C. Ramos from Rizal High School for his
research titled, “Production, Characterization, and Argonomic Assessment of Urea
Intercalated Coconut Shell Biochar as Slow Release Fertilizer” with his coach Oliver A.
Lahorra. He was awarded P5,000, medal, pin, and certificate. The third prize of P3,000
was awarded to Louise Adrian E. Vicente from FEATI Senior High for creating the
“Aerospace Mobile Game” under the tutelage of Glen Jose Y. Saño and Leonila B.
Valdez.
At the College level a Special Citation Award was given to Alvin Rex L. Arellano, Renz
Von D. de los Santos, and Javier Paulo A. Sarmiento representing the Aeronautical
Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance Technology Department of FEATI University for
their project titled “Development of a Lightweight UAV Propeller Using Locally Available
Core Structures” under the Research Competition-Conceptual Category. The team,
advised by Engr. Joefreim A. Delicano and Engr. Lemuel F. Banal, was awarded P
2,000, medals, pins, and certificates.
For the Research Competition-Documented Category, the first prize of P 5,000, medals,
pins, and certificates were awarded to Ma. Donna Cone F. Anoba, Arriz L. De Lumban,
Princess Marjorie E. Estacio, and Dominique Faith A. Valdez, representing the
University’s Geodetic Engineering Department. Their research is entitled “GIS Mapping
of Estuaries in Manila: A Case Study and 3D Modelling of Estero de San Miguel and
Vicinities Using UAV”. Their research adviser was Engr. Mary Jane R. Montemor.
The second prize of P 3,000 went to Athena Grace P. Fafoutakis, Joanna Lou A. De
Vera, Kristian Jude Erwin B. Tandas, and Greshane C. Katigbak representing the
Geodetic Engineering Department. Their research project was titled “Determination of
Slope Percentage for Land Classification at Balete, Batangas Through 3D Mapping
Using Drone, RTK and Remote Sensing.” Their research adviser was Engr. Mary Jane
R. Montemor.
Last, but not the least, the third place went to Ivan Laurence P. Sierra, Emerson Joshua
M. Pascor, Javier Paulo A. Sarmiento, Alvin Rex L. Arellano, and Jayeson Oliver G.
Relato from the Aeronautical Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance Technology
Department. The team won P 2,000 for their research project titled “Noise Assessment
in Ninoy Aquino International Airport Using a Mobile Sound Meter Application.” Their
research adviser was Engr. Joefreim A. Delicano.
Orienteering challenge
Another exciting activity during the Expo was the Orienteering Challenge where
competitors were given a problem to solve in a course with designated control points
where participants will find the shortest possible route to complete the task in the
shortest possible time aided only by a map and a compass.
The top prize went to the President Sergio Osmeña High School with 94 points. The
team was composed of the following: Roanne Daphne B. Zablan, Janus L. Sia, Armiel
Grace F. Rivera, Vincent P. Dayrit, and Ailheenel Keynt A. Ciego. The team who won P
3,000, pins and certificates was coached by Marilou L. Geruela and Rossana C.
Ramos.
Team 2 of the Manuel G. Arellano High School snatched the second place with team
members: Vernice G. Gallano, Alyssandrea M. Rigor, Francine Gabrielle C. Tajanlangit,
Joshua Petalbert, Rose Hannah L. Cruz, and Jhastene Phoebe Dargantes. They got 93
points and the prize of P 2,000. Their coach was Maria Cecilia A. Santiago.
The third prize went to Team 1 of the Manuel G. Arellano High School with 88 points
and P 1,000. The team coached by Ms. Santiago also was composed of the following:
Kiana Anthea V. Prilla, Carl Sebastian L. Patagnan, Reyginald Cruz, Carlitos Yuan B.
Lomboy, and Mark Noel L. Chavez.
Artistically inclined
After the strenuous challenge came the test of those who were artistically inclined, the
On-the-Spot Art Competition for high school students.
The top plum went to Bianca Hans A. Adriano from Pasay City National High School
with a prize of P 1,500, pin, certificate and artwork. Her coaches were Michelle
Miramonte-Carranza and Kaye J. Transfiguracion.
Having the same coaches, Julianne Marie S. Tugna, also from the Pasay City National
High School won the second prize with P 1,000, pin, certificate and artwork.
Lastly, the third slot was awarded to David John C. Seriosa with cash prize of P 500,
pin, certificate and artwork. He came from the same schools as the other winners with
the same coaches.
Expo partners
The FEATI University S&T Expo became another milestone for the school as it
showcased the many talents of its students and different facets of academic life. It was
again a successful event and it was made possible by the generosity of its partners who
made their contributions.
