FEATI University in DOST National Science and Technology Week 2016

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) recently celebrated its annual National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) with eight clusters of DOST, namely, agriculture micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), industry, information technology and business process management (IT-BPM), government service, healthcare, human resources, weather, and geologic hazards.

The NSTW, celebrated every third week of July of each year through Proclamation No. 169 of 1993, is open to the public. It aims to recognize the contribution of science and technology in the development of the country and garner support from the public and private institutions for its sustainable development.

With the overall theme Juan Science. One Nation, this year’s NSTW was simultaneously celebrated in various regions of the country led by new DOST Secretary Fortunato T. De La Pena, his first S&T activity for the year.

The 2016 NSTW featured several technology open houses, symposia, scientific forums, technology fairs, film showings, scientific career talks, and technology launches with FEATI University among those invited to be one of the few exhibitors from the academe. FEATI’s exhibit was located at the DOST Complex, Bicutan, Taguig City.

Presented were winning researches in FEATI’s S&T Expo held last March 2016. These were researches from the EE-ECE Department (2221Bike: Two batteries charged by two generators in stationary or traveling mode using a bicycle); GE Department (Highlighting urbanization and its impacts on agricultural lands in Malolos, Bulacan with the use of landsat images and GIS; Manila Bay water turbidity assessment using remote sensing); Aero/AMT Department (Effects of UAV propeller blade tip) and CE Department (Observation of backflow in Estero de Quiapo). A Prototype of the 2221 bike was also displayed and demonstrated. Present at the exhibit to discuss these researches were Dr. Rogelio A. Panlasigui (COE Dean and ORDE Director), Prof. Leo Mendel D. Rosario (ORDE Deputy Director), Engr. Virgilio A. Zacarias, Jr. (EE-ECE Research Adviser) Engr. Mary Ann F. Manlapao (ORDE Research Coordinator), Nina Marie Ann-Julene M. Crescini (ECE graduate researcher) and Adrian B. Gonzales (GE graduate researcher). About 400 registered to the FEATI exhibit as a result of the buzz generated by the prototype bike. Flyers of the research abstracts and brochures of the newly-opened FEATI Senior High School were handed out to event-goers.

FEATI University also participated in DOST/NCR-sponsored seminars and demos: Intellectual Property in Business; Baking Demonstration; Marketing Your Business; and Jumpstart Your Business through DOST-PEZA Open TBI.

Nina Marie Ann-Julene M Crescini, who just graduated this June, said she was happy to have shared her research to a wider community and wants to inspire other FEATI ECE students to improve on her research especially after receiving inquiries about where her prototype can be bought. The prototype has yet to be patented before going commercial by way of retail.
