FEATI U salutes its outstanding engineers and architects, the great builders of yesterday, today and tomorrow
STA. CRUZ, Manila – FEATI University, with a long tradition of achievements in Engineering and Architecture once again salutes and pays tribute to its outstanding alumni and students during the FEATI Engineering and Architecture Awards 2018 held on March 9 at the University Activity Center.
FEATI University President Dr. Adolfo Jesus R. Gopez opened the awarding ceremonies with an inspiring message that encouraged all FEATInians to uphold the school’s tradition of excellence for the past seven decades.
“I am honored once again to be in the company of achievers, men and women of this prestigious university, and I, together with the faculty and administration, am very proud to be part of their success as well. In giving tribute to these outstanding alumni, we likewise give recognition to FEATI University for providing an environment conducive to learning and for being instrumental in molding the minds and hearts of our students to become productive citizens,” said Dr. Gopez.
Reliable strategic partners
As a tribute to its industry partners for their valuable contribution in supporting the Engineering and Architecture programs of the University, Continuing Industry Partner Awards were given to the following: Prompt Managers & Construction Services, Inc., DMCI Construction Survey, RASA Surveying & Realty, RC Tollo Surveying Services and THETAN Computerized Mapping & Engineering Services.
New Industry Partner Awards were given to the following: CONCEP Inc., FACEI Builders and Development Corporation, FINMAT International Resources, Inc., GIBMA Engineering Services, Joint Venture Audio Visual and Lighting, Inc., Borland Development Corporation, Carlos P. Dizon Land Surveys, DMCI Project Developers, Inc., G.P. Artieda Surveying Office, and Jeeomatrix Surveying and Development Co.
In recognition of its valuable role in streamlining the recruitment process for FEATI graduates, the Recruitment Industry Partner Award was given to Jobs180.com. The company continues to provide support so new graduates can land their choice jobs.
Topnotch architects
The University also paid tribute to individuals who excelled in their own fields of expertise and showed remarkable achievements in their careers.
Architect Renato A. Heray is one of two 2018 recipients of the Professional Award for Architecture. Arch Heray is a 1985 graduate of BS Architecture. He is a registered ASEAN architect and currently the secretary general of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP). He was recognized as the most outstanding UAP member in 2012 and received the Philippine Quill Award for his invaluable assistance during Typhoon Yolanda relief efforts in collaboration with ABS-CBN. He has been a principal architect of iC Architecture and Landscapes from 1999 up to the present.
The other recipient of the Professional Award for Architecture was Arch Domingo LL. Tablizo Jr. He is a BS Architecture graduate of 1982 and is also a registered ASEAN architect. He is a Fellow by the UAP College of Fellows, which recognized him for his Public Service in 2003. He was given the UAP Presidential Award of Excellence for crafting the Architecture bill and being instrumental in its passage as Republic Act 9266, also known as the Architecture Law of 2004. He is currently the chief of the construction management section of the National Bureau of Investigation.
Top performing engineers
The university gave recognition to top performing engineers for their valuable contributions in their respective disciplines.
The Professional Award for Electrical Engineering was given to Engr. Jose A. Silvestre. Engr. Silvestre graduated in 1970 and placed 4th in the Electrical Engineering Licensure Examination in 1974. He received a Plaque of Recognition for Academic Excellence from FEATI University in 1977 and was a recipient of President's Gold Medal Award when he obtained his master of arts in education degree in 2004, also from FEATI University. He served the University as electrician while he was a working student and was promoted to electrical supervisor upon graduation. Subsequently he became a full time Electrical Engineering Department faculty member until his retirement in 2015.
The Professional Award for Geodetic Engineering was given to Engr. Jose P. Gatus. He is a FEATIU graduate of Associate in Surveying in 1959 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Geodetic Engineering from the University of the Philippines in 1964. He was the Assistant Director of Land Management Bureau in Manila. He obtained his PhD in Public Administration from Mindanao University of Science & Technology in 2012. He authored various books on geodetic engineering and the practice of geodetic engineering. In 2017 he was the recipient of the Most Outstanding Professional of the Year in Geodetic Engineering, an award given by the Philippine Regulation Commission.
The Professional Award for Mechanical Engineering was given to a 1973 graduate who rose through the ranks to become the president of National Power Corporation. Engr. Pio J. Benavidez finished his BS in Mechanical Engineering, cum laude in 1973 even as he served as a Teaching Assistant in Mathematics in his senior year. He was appointed Instructor upon graduation and served until 1976, when he joined the National Power Corporation. His natural flair for creating devices and gadgets earned him special recognition from the Department of Science and Technology as the Most Outstanding Inventor in 1991. He is considered a pioneer in geothermal engineering and renewable energy resource development. He is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Power Corporation.
The second Professional Award for Mechanical Engineering for 2018 was given to Dr. Archie B. Maglaya, who completed his BS Mechanical Engineering course in FEATI University in 1979. He is the National Deputy Vice President for Technical Affairs of the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is also a registered peer reviewer of World Applied Science Journal. He was awarded as the Most Outstanding Mechanical Engineer in 2017 by the Professional Regulation Commission. He is presently a full professor and graduate program coordinator at De La Salle University.
FEATI.LIFE Awards
The University also recognized the distinguished individuals, including non-alumni who have exhibited exemplary achievement in their own field of expertise while serving the University thereby serving as beacons for FEATI alumni to emulate. By their actions and achievements these awardees have contributed significantly to the legacy of FEATI University.
Arch. Juan Marcos G. Arellano, Jr. was the first Dean of the College of Architecture of FEATI University from 1953-1954. Prior to joining FEATIU, he was the head of the Board of Examiners for Architecture in 1935, and1947 to 1948. He was recognized as the Most Outstanding Filipino Architect in the American Period and served as the first president of the Philippine Institute of Architects. His son, Mr. Juan Marcos Arellano, Jr., received the award on his behalf.
The other awardee was a man for all seasons with exemplary achievements in the academe and government who served FEATIU in the last decade and a half as Vice President for Academic Affairs. The posthumous award was given to Dr. Leopoldo V. Abis who graduated from the University of the Philippines with two degrees, BS Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering in 1953 and 1954. He obtained his masters degree in mechanical engineering from Kansas State University in 1958 and his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university in 1969. He served as Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean of the UP College of Engineering. In 1989 he was appointed Executive Director of the Metals Industry Research and Development Center of the DOST (where his Deputy Executive Director was none other than the present President of FEATIU) and later promoted to Undersecretary for Regional Operations under then DOST Secretary Ceferino L. Follosco up to 1997. He was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs of FEATI University in 2003, Executive Vice President from 2009 to 2016 and Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2016 until his demise on November 2017. His wife, Mrs. Lilia Abis was there to receive the award on his behalf.
Batch Achievers Awards
The Batch Achievers Award is given as recognition of FEATIU Engineering and Architecture graduates who passed or topped the board examinations, excelled in research and applied technology, and have been given citations by other known institutions for their remarkable achievements.
The distinguished architects given the award were Arch. Anna Lissa B. Gonzales, Arch. Armando W. Tracena, and Arch. Danilo G. de los Reyes Jr. who passed the board examination in 2017.
Those who passed the Civil Engineering Licensure Examination in 2017 were Engr. Jaycee C. Misal and Engr. Datu Amibahar A. Sangkula
The board passers in Geodetic Engineering present during the ceremonies were the following: Engr. Sherwin P. Artieda, Engr. Honeyleth M. Avecilla, Engr. Ma. Marilyn E. Balacuit, Engr. Gemmarc T. Lasala, Engr. Jeffry A. Martinez, Engr. Jim Earl Rhego C. Molino, Engr. Roma l. Pardilla, Engr. Arjay P. Punongbayan, Engr. Eidrich Edferson S. Santos, Engr. Trece Theodor E. Tolentino, and Engr. Nilo Jazon l. Triviño.
The other board passers who were not able to attend were the following: Engr. Richard Dean F. Ancheta, Engr. John Patrick K. Austria, Engr. Maria Cristina B. Berin, Engr. Ronaldo hH. Besmonte, Engr. Rosiel B. Bruzola, Engr. Riza Mariz B. Cacabelos, Engr. Lean Andrew C. Cardino, Engr. Rodolfo P. Dayanghirang II, Engr. Charmane Mae M. Depositario, Engr. Cyril Deane S. Esteria, Engr. Cymon M. Red Hat Awards for academic excellence
Last but not the least of the awards was the Red Hat Award given to FEATI University Engineering and Architecture students, on regular status, who attained the highest grade point average in the last academic year in his or her year level in the program enrolled in. He or she must have also exhibited exemplary character and discipline thereby serving as a role model for other students to emulate.
The recipients of this award were: 3rd year student Richard Christopher Vasquez, 4th year student Lodgie S. Fainsan Jr. and 5th year student John Felix F. Fortu all from BS Geodetic Engineering.
So, look up young man, look up!
The very inspiring night was capped by an equally inspiring message from Dr. Rogelio A. Panlasigui, Dean of the College of Engineering, who praised the stellar performance of FEATIU alumni and students as well as the faculty for maintaining the highest standard in academic excellence.
True to form, Dr. Panlasigui also extended his appreciation and gratitude to the university management and its industry partners for the continuous support in making FEATI University a cut above the rest. In closing Dr. Panlasigui gave reference to the university slogan, “Look up young man, look up!” as the guiding spirit in every FEATInian to always pursue excellence.
