Founders’ Day and S&T Expo 2015
Remembering the Aranetas While Setting Our Sights on the Future

Following tradition, FEATI University observed Founders’ Day on the 108th birthday of its grand dame, president and founder, Victoria Lopez de Araneta (VLA), also honoring founding president Salvador Zaragoza Araneta (SZA). VLA became the second president of FEATI in 1951 when SZA was invited by President Elpidio Quirino to become a member of his cabinet. VLA was to become highly prominent in the University’s day-to-day operations, but SZA’s support was instrumental to the University’s success. Together, they made FEATI University one of the most admired universities in the country. When Martial Law hit in the 1970s the business of education started to become shaky but FEATI weathered and recovered largely because of the foundations laid out by the founders. They may have left this earth a long time ago but the FEATI family continues to celebrate their memory which happened last March 6, 2015; a day marked with celebratory musical tributes, speeches, and a huge birthday cake. The ceremony was sweet, sentimental, and the perfect platform on which to launch ‘Ang Teknolohiya sa Manilenyo, Tuloy ang Pag-Asenso’: FEATI University’s Annual S&T Expo where students, faculty members, alumni, and exhibitors took the opportunity to present and demonstrate tech-centric research projects to the science and technology community. This theme was adapted knowing that research and development work being done by our students can very well be used, when completed, by our Manila residents. The keynote speaker was Atty. Ericson A. Alcovendaz, Manila’s City Administrator, representing Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada.

As usual, the S&T Expo was filled with activities that challenged the intellectual abilities of participants. Students from different high schools within Metro Manila came together to test their cerebral abilities in the “Quik Minds Orienteering Challenge,” a FEATI-driven intellectual challenge that has become one of the most anticipated events of the S&T Expo; the Zara Cup, a prestigious award was granted to the best research project in the college category; the high school research competition; and the Founders’ Day on-the-spot art competition.

The FEATI S&T Expo was organized by the Office of Research, Development, and Extension Services (ORDE) chaired by Dr. Rogelio A. Panlasigui, Dean of the College of Engineering (COE) and Director of ORDE; Prof. Leo Mendel D. Rosario, Deputy Director; and Engr. Mary Ann “Mae” Faderanga-Manlapao, FEATI Research Coordinator.

Onward to 2016 for the next big idea in science and technology! Congratulations to all the winners who had their hands full of trophies, medals, certificates of recognition, and a modest cash prize to celebrate their wins! This is the first time in FEATI S&T Expo’s history that all winners for both documented and conceptual researches were from only one department – that is, the GEODETIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT.
Victoria Lopez de Araneta and Salvador Zaragoza Araneta, we will always remember!
