FEATI News

Captain Orlando Tantoco Africa

The FEATI University Engineering and Architecture Awards are the first event of its kind in recent years. It was held on March 7, 2017 at Golden Bay Restaurant, Pasay City to celebrate and honor exemplary achievements in architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geodetic engineering, information technology, electrical engineering, electronics and communications engineering, and chemical engineering. Previously the FEATI Aviation Awards had been held in January for aeronautical engineering, aircraft maintenance technology and the aviation industry.

The awards began with the recognition of the various industry partners of FEATIU College of Engineering and College of Architecture for their strong and continuing support of the training needs of the students.

FEATIU President Dr. Adolfo Jesus R. Gopez, College of Architecture Dean Maria Joycelyn B. Mananghaya and FEATI Dean of the College of Engineering Dr. Rogelio A. Panlasigui handed out awards to the following industry partners:

That done, the program moved on to honor outstanding individuals with professional awards. Again, Dr. Gopez, Dean Mananghaya and Dr. Panlasigui stayed on stage to hand the awards out to FEATI alumni who continue to distinguish themselves in their respective professions by performing at high levels of competence, assisting the University in their own way, and bringing pride to FEATIU and the FEATI Community.

Receiving the Professional Awards were:

Architect Enrique O. Olonan in the field of Architecture

Engr. Bonifacio V. Manuel and Engr. Gilbert B. Magbutay in the field of Civil Engineering

Engr. Eladio Sta. Maria, Jr. in the field of Mechanical Engineering

Engr. Eduardo B. Sarmiento and Engr. Godofredo P. Artieda in the field of Geodetic Engineering

Engr. Felizardo R.  Sevilla, Jr. in the field of Electrical Engineering

Engr. Erwin I. Francisco in the field of Electronics and Communications Engineering

A Special Award was given to recognize Engr. Aniceto R. Liwanag who in 1973 was the first Geodetic Engineering Board Examination topnotcher of the University. Engr. Liwanag started a long chain of more than 20 first placers in the GE Board Examination together with hundreds of top ten performers up to the present.

Lifetime Achievement Awardees for significant contributions in Engineering were Engr. Ernesto J. Casis for Mechanical Engineering, Engr. Alfredo D. Antonio in the field of Geodetic Engineering, Engr. Rodolfo R. Peñalosa for Electrical Engineering, and Engr. Rolando A. Jaurige in Chemical Engineering. These FEATInian Engineers have been awarded by the Professional Regulation Commission or their respective professional societies as outstanding engineers in their profession.

On behalf of all the professional awardees Engr. Ernesto J. Casis gave a response thanking FEATI for giving him the education, training and orientation that went a long way in propelling all of them to their present achievements.

The evening of celebration did not end there. It was now time for the FEATI Life Award, an award of distinction accorded to alumni and non-alumni who have lived and become a fine example of the FEATI life, even as they paved a path to success for engineering professionals to follow and above all, showed in words and actions…dedication to God, country, family and FEATI. The FEATI Life Award automatically inducts the awardees to the FEATI Hall of Fame.

The FEATI Life Award recipients for 2017:

Dr. Ceferino L. Follosco in the field of Mechanical Engineering (Posthumous) was a FEATI graduate of BS Electrical Engineering, summa cum laude and BS Mechanical Engineering, magna cum laude. He was active in the car and vehicle manufacturing industry, becoming Vice President of Ford Philippines and establishing his own group of companies making agricultural implements and machinery.  He became Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology and was one of the first six Filipinos (and the sole FEATInian at that time) accredited as an APEC Engineer.

Engr. Ricardo F. Del Rosario in the field of Mechanical Engineering, who would later give a short talk on his “Reminiscences”, is a 1959 BSME graduate of FEATI.  He topped the PRC examinations for Junior Mechanical Engineer (now Registered Mechanical Engineer), Professional Mechanical Engineer and the specialization examination in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.  He was faculty member of FEATIU for more than a decade and then established his own refrigeration and air conditioning company before joining the DLSU Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is the recipient of various awards including the FEATI University Alumni Association Outstanding Alumnus Award and the PSME (Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers) Outstanding Mechanical Engineer Award.

Engineer Privadi J.G. Dalire in the field of Geodetic Engineering (Posthumous) was a graduate of the University of the Philippines who served with Bureau of Lands, retiring as a Director.  He worked concurrently as a part-time faculty member of FEATI University and later became the Chair of the Geodetic Engineering Department.  During his long stint with the Department he taught, fostered and mentored no less than 23 first placers in the GE Board examination as well as hundreds of top ten performers.  He established the mentoring system in the Department while maintaining close ties with its alumni thus allowing GE students to have “real-life” learning while in the University.

Also inducted posthumously in the FEATI Hall of Fame were fellow FEATI Life Awardees Dr. Gregorio Y. Zara and Dean Jose M. Segovia.

Dr. Zara was a FEATI Professor of Aeronautics in 1946, then Chair of the Aeronautical Engineering Department in 1962 and later Dean of Engineering and Technology and Director of Research. He was elected Executive Vice-President of the University from 1946 to 1962 and served as acting president in 1956. He retired from government service in 1946 and eventually became a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Zara has thirty devices and equipment patented to his name and is the inventor of the two-way video phone in 1955. He completed his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of the Philippines, the University of Michigan, and Sorbonne University in Paris, France,
Dean Jose M. Segovia is one of four FEATI University administrators that have been named among the “Top 100 Engineers of the Century” awarded by the UP Alumni Engineers on the occasion of the UP College of Engineering centennial on June 13, 2010. Dean Segovia was one of those chosen from among the thousands of UP engineering graduates “to pay tribute to the great minds of the UP engineering alumni”. Dean Jose M. Segovia UP Electrical Engineering class of 1944 is a former Dean of FEATI University Institute of Engineering and Technology from 1963 to 1980 and President of the University from 1980 to 2001. He lead “from the front” and served as an example for FEATInians by his dedication to the University.

Engr. Ricardo F. Del Rosario gave his “Reminiscences” of his time as a student in FEATI and his professional experiences. He recounted how he was “serial” topnotcher in the Mechanical Engineering examinations, first as a Junior Mechanical Engineer, then as Professional Mechanical Engineer and the specialization examination in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. The ever smiling engineer said that his FEATI education and training, especially his positive attitude lead him from accomplishment to accomplishment.

It was an evening to honor achievers and their achievements, for going “above and beyond”… Congratulations to the awardees!  FEATI University is ever grateful to them for serving the University, excelling in their respective professions, but most of all for giving honor to their alma mater.

There was also laughter, dancing, and singing, but most of all bonds were made and remade, good memories created and shared, enough to last until the next FEATI University celebration of achievements. (AMD)
