Architects are City Changers

Can a utopian Manila really be achieved? Manila with its filth, smog, pollution, and eerie rundown buildings is set to see resurgence and poised to recapture its halcyon days, inspiring awe rather than dismay? Well, if you ask FEATI University’s College of Architecture (COA), Manila can! It certainly has the potential. This is why the College, with the participation of its dean, administration, faculty, and students, came together with one goal, push Manila to be the best it can become by celebrating the World Day of Architecture with the theme, “Architects are City Changers.”

The event held at the 4th floor of the university’s corporate center was attended by United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) National President Arch. Sonny Rosal, UAP WDA Chairman Arch. Alberto Quiliboso, national members of the UAP, and guests from the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP). An exhibit from COA students and architects from the UAP were put together underscoring the event but the most awaited unveiling was the scale model of Utopian Manila and 3D artwork supporting the vision. Dr. Gloria Mateo-Alberto and Sr. Nice M. Favorito led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Joining them were the special guests from UAP. Utopian Manila sees a city rising from decay, an urban prophylaxis, if you may.

In her speech, MJB Mananghaya, Dean of the College of Architecture, explained Utopian Manila as far removed from today’s reality. She says, “The Manila of the future is a city that is livable, where built areas harmoniously coincide with green spaces, where rationale is upheld and applied in buildings and open space design, in its uses, appearance, significance and proportions.Utopian Manila invites us to take a look into the future and envisage radically different ways of living in the city, imagining the best organization of infrastructure and architecture.”

The exhibit went on for three days and invited more than its fair share of interest and curiosity of a city that has yet to be great again. (AMD)
