Hands On Learning at “Career Congress 2009”

FEATInians Herlijk Gregorio, Roxanne Digo, Dominique Marasigan, Glenn Jose Saño, Sarah Joy Estiaga, Marilou Solano, Gabriel John Verzola, William George Ojascastro, Dave Edward Jandusay and Alexander Manipon together with almost a thousand students from various colleges and universities in the metro participated in JobStreet.com’s Career Congress 2009: Leadership in Action, August 28, SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

The day-long activity exposed the students to first-hand knowledge in landing key positions in industry. Seasoned speakers educated the participants on how to work with their respective school administrations in establishing worthwhile projects for the students.

The learning did not stop there, however, for students were also given first-hand knowledge on how to capture sponsorships from external companies to finance those projects as well as on how to use their leadership skills to the fullest in helping their respective organizations attain their goals. As the day continued, it became apparent why Jobstreet.com had subtitled the Congress as “Leadership in Action”. Facilitators provided the participants with lots of tips as well as the dos and don’ts in being a leader and how to use that leadership to land a high-flying career--and everything in between. To sustain this serious learning, McDonald's provided lunch and snacks, ensuring that aside from the mind, the body was properly fed.

Preparing a resume that would guarantee an interview, as well as improving the chances of passing that interview, was also tackled, making the students say “ahh” and “ohh” as they realized how to do those two things right--and in the best way possible. In the last portion of the Congress, participants were given the time to present their respective projects aimed at helping their school improve its job placement program for students; and a number of students presented their ideas. It was however, FEATInian Herlijk Gregorio who really took the spotlight as he was the only one among the student presentors who insisted that he be listened to, and for that, he received a big round of applause not only from the participants but also from the organizers. In fact, hp, one of the sponsors, even gave him a special gift for his courage in demanding that his co-participants listen to what he had to say.

While the day ended, it did not mark the end of learning for the participants as they were given conference kits in the form of CD’s and magazines so that they could share what they had learned with their schoolmates. Thanks to Jobstreet.com and its partners, McDonald’s, hp, Roche, Nestle, Neumonyx, Globe Telecoms, VXI, IBM, and PMAP, there are venues like this that allow students to learn from the experts on what is really expected from them by industry and how they could not only meet, but surpass those expectations.
