FEATI UNIVERSITY FINE ARTS STUDENT IS 2ND IN DLSU CENTENNIAL SCULPTURE CONTEST
Lance Kirby Yaneza, a School of Fine Arts student from FEATI University placed 2nd in a nationwide sculpture contest sponsored recently by The Museum at De La Salle University (DLSU). The contest was held in honor of DLSU’s centennial celebration happening in June 2011. Lance competed with Fine Arts students from other universities and colleges in Manila and other parts of the country. The entries constituted a veritable showcase of the best of large–scale and contemporary sculptures that depict the theme “Remembering the Past, Living the Present, and Creating the Future.”
The top prize was won by Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA) Gabreyel Ferrer with “Pagbubunyi,” a sculpture that incorporates abstract shapes reaching up to the sky and thereby producing an interesting pattern of shadows. Gabreyel took home PhP 150,000.00 for her winning entry.
FEATI University’s Lance Kirby Yaneza placed second with his entry, “A Century of Excellence,” which features the likeness of leaves frozen in a spiral movement. Lance took home the one-hundred-thousand-peso cash prize for his efforts.
Another PHSA student, Alia Julia Pablo, won third place with “Unzip,” a zipper-inspired artwork depicting the past, present, and future, even as it evokes unity and a sense of forward movement. For placing third, Alia got to take home the cash prize of PhP 75,000.00
Judging all the entries were National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon Abueva as chair; and members: art critic-artist Cid Reyes; sculptor Dan Raralio; Br. Edmundo Fernandez FSC of DLSU; and Jose Mari Magpayo also of DLSU.
Lance’s winning sculpture, along with the other top winners’ prized pieces, will be unveiled to the DLSU community on June 16, 2011.
